How is meaning presented in 'The Wire'?

This scene being presented was taking place through the mise en scene of Baltimore. This area is located within the United States of America and is specifically known for being a place filled with poverty. We can understand as an audience that Baltimore is poverty ridden by the artistic props used with graffiti and garbage spread around the setting of the filming and being made visible by the camera lens. The actors used were not all professionals and many were simply members of the public who were willing to shoot for this show. The majority of the actors are black raced. This show contained the most black race in show history and had made the filming in relation to Baltimore to be the most realistic as possible. The benefit of ‘The Wire’ using general people from the street for actors was the great fact that their accents of street talk was the strongest and less improvised.

The clip was indicating that their had been a drug problem, this was first shown in the clip when one of the main actors was moving rather slowly towards a fridge with many others standing around him, the slow motive feeling was done to create more suspense and as the fridge was opened it was made quite clear what sort of criminal act was taking place. Crime scenes can also be emphasized by types of sounds used. In this short clip a diagetic sound of the police vehicles sirens were heard. This may show that Baltimore has either a lot of crime happening or this siren was in relation to the drug crime which had recently occurred. Furthermore, there was another use of diagetic sound which may have been enhanced for a more dramatic effect. The car tires were making a loud screeching noise which was presenting the fired angry  chasing officers who were after the criminals.

Different types of shots were used to portray different perspectives of happenings. As police officers were barging through a closed door to capture the criminals, at the beginning of the chase, the camera men were filming the perspective behind them as if the audience are chasing the criminals. This showed a feeling as if they are equal with them. As the chase gets more intense the camera uses cross cutting to a perspective of the camera being in front of the chase, this aspect may be indicating from the criminal’s eyes as the police get closer, we see their anger driven faces and bold body language attempting to attack and arrest the necessary people. Also, a dolly shot has been used, when moving around one of the criminals, this important shot is used to gather attention to the actor’s body language and how anxiety filled he was, looking around him in panic.

In addition, different camera angles were used. Then the police had caught their criminals, many were on the knees with their arms behind their backs. This position was shown with a higher camera angle. The police who were standing by them alongside a few innocent people from the public, from the lower angle of the criminals this now signifies that their bold, powerful personalities have ceased and rapidly decreased due to the positioning of themselves through their body language.

Symbolism has been used within this short clip. Time. Time can mean several things but in this scenario, the prop of an object of a clock was shown to the guilty criminals in the hands of someone who seemed rather important. He looked as if he was hiding the clock from the officers but made it clear to one of the criminals what he was holding. This could symbolize that time was over, and that it is now late and the crime scene has come to an end. Following this brief moment. A scene followed when a group of young boys were running into a house, where it had gone from sunlight hours to dark really quick, as they were gathered around a television, one of the boys had taken his hat of whilst shrugging. This non verbal communication portrays that everything is over with the day and has come to an end. Moreover, another use of symbolism has been used. One of the officers was holding a small mobile phone

The group of the boys were watching with great concentration, a case on television which looked to be a type of conference. Different shots were used. It commenced with a shot of the television from the actor’s eye view, then it moved to the televisions view of the actors watching, then lastly, the audience are taken to the live conference which was happening at that moment in time. The jump sensation between the locations indicates that a lot was going on in a small period of time. There was cross cutting between the man providing the speech and some of the press who seemed to not be taking matters so serious, there was smirking and giggling directed from one of the women, this may be set of non verbal communication that symbolizes that she found the matters of the day not so serious and rather humorous whereas the man holding his speech had a contrasting opinion to her.

Discuss the ways in which media products are produced and distributed to audiences, within a media area, that you have studied.

Discuss the ways in which media products are produced and distributed to audiences, within a media area, that you have studied.

Media products are produced and distributed to its audience in a variety of ways. Most of the time they are distributed digitally which promotes advertisement. This is because the human race of today spends typically hours of their day on an electronic device, and tend to believe whatever they see on the internet. This can be a blessing for film producers. Time are evolving and the way media products are distributed is a lot more-wide scale than years ago where internet wasn't available for all and the only way to know about a movie was hearing it amongst the community or taking a trip to the local cinema office.

The film that has recently been released in the cinemas, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (2017) written by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulus is a good example of the distribution process. This was a co- production between two big film companies called, Walt Disney Pictures and Mandeville films.

Walt Disney spent around one hundred and forty million dollars to market this film worldwide. This may seem like a big total, but their total profit is targeted to be much bigger.  Walt Disney were smart the way the way they distributed. They decided to leak a small teaser clip of the film to be shown. The word spread rather quickly on social media, the film teaser clip gained roughly ninety-two million views in just twenty-four hours. This was a great achievement which  left thousands of people discussing how excited they are to watch the full film. Walt Disney has a reputation to market their movies with teasers all around for all, such as, Star Wars and Captain America. Although, Beauty and the Beast (2017) gained the most views in the teaser clips. This may be due to the twist, that there was an original 'Beauty and the Beast' in 1946. Since then there has been more modern day versions presented, including cartoons. This shows that when Walt Disney made a modern day 2017 version, it was very sure there would be a positive outcome because it had already held great achievements for its story line over the past several decades.

‘Beauty and the Beast’’ (2017) is a family based, musical fantasy genre. The sales in the box office hit a great success after it made an unexpected one hundred and seventy million US dollars in just its three-day opening weekend. The movie was so popular that it was reported to have sold out in one thousand show times in many big cities.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ (2017) was distributed on a magazine called the ‘Entertainment weekly’ this magazine promotes any exciting things the public might want to watch.  Walt Disney had paid for their poster of the film to be on the front cover of the magazine. This method will not only attract the typical weekly readers of this magazine but because the poster is on the front cover, whoever passes by shops will have their eye draw attention to it. This was a smart idea to use. The majority of this magazine readers will be an audience from twenty-five and above. However, the use of ‘Beauty and the beast’ (2017) on the front cover will attract the younger generation also. Moreover, Walt Disney decided to use a very famous icon to the generation of today. This icon is called ‘Emma Watson’. ‘Emma Watson’ starred in one of the best films of all time ‘Harry potter’. Here she was one of the main characters and gained great recognition and popularity over the years. This was another factor how the film was distributed. Using great actors like herself gathers attractions of audiences from all perspectives.

In addition, social media had a big influence on ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (2017). The leading role of ‘Belle’, was acted by ‘Emma Watson’ which was mentioned previously. ‘Emma Watson’ used her social media accounts to advertise the release day of this film, with a picture of her waltzing about in her character’s dress. She captioned the image telling her fans that the day of the release was today and she wished them enjoyment to watch it. Overall, her Instagram page has a large twenty-seven point four million followers, therefore, realistically this means around twenty million people from her audience most likely became a ‘Beauty and the beast’ (2017) audience also.

‘Beauty and the beast’ (2017) was mostly distributed using visual components. However, there are other ways things can get distributed. This includes the sound through radio. Many things can get mentioned in radio hours. This is typically new music which is released. Although, there has been cases where films have been mentioned on the more informal radio channels and general other advertisements, lastly any breaking news in usually the primary media that reaches the radio stations first.

Working in Media

Working in Media

Within media, there are all sorts of sections which makes media what it is today. There are television, films, newspapers, radio station, news (journalism) and magazines. Media is something that is known as a mass communication where interesting information which is useful to the public will be presented somehow which can then inform the public using different methods making them aware of the information.

In each section there are different types of jobs which make up their category, without them the communication between media and the public would be non existent.

For example; in the making of films there are a lot of people and jobs required to make the film ready to present. Firstly, within the film crew there will need to be a director, producer, a designer of the set. photographer, costumer designers. Also, make up artist, prop organisers, editors and composers.

Newspapers and magazines also contain articles which are used for media and communicating with the newspaper readers about the happenings of the world. For a newspaper to be ready for publishment there are many jobs involved for this to happen. The newspaper journalists will have to work the hardest. Their stories are usually from the general public themselves when they hear about a suitable media source. Their writing will then be proof read over by an editor.

Radio stations are used across the world, the set of them are usually extremely busy as often they are live and there will be no room for error. Firstly, Podcast producers, radio broadcast assistant, journalist, radio commercials producer, news editor, presenter, news producer and reporters.

Television, there will be actors required to make up the programs for the channels. choreographer, with their assistants, audio editors, schedulers, broadcaster, camera operators and assistant. Directors, costumer designer, executive producer, lighting technician, hair and makeup artist. In addition to these, location managers, production buyer, script writer and supervisor. There are also many smaller jobs, but these are the larger to medium roles.

Working in media has always been a large appeal to society.  The glamourous looks that area spread across media intrigues people to work in this spectrum. Over all media there are stories, movies and many other things including celebrities and important people. People who wish to work in this industry will think that maybe one day they can work with these celebrities. It is an exciting career as they have the chance to start at the bottom like most do and work their way to the top if they are extremely motivated. This lures people in. This popular career choice is on which has a large variety of jobs, some low paying and some extremely high. However, what people like about media is that even if they start off their career lower down the industries hierarchy they have a big chance to climb. Its an industry full of hope and excitement. Media is popular towards people who have a creative mindset, where they can use their imagination to create ideas. An example of this is Calvin Stowell. Calvin Stowell worked in digital direction at the company DoSomething.org which is a non profit organization which helps and talks to teens about social change. He made posts which produced over 1.5 million views. He has become extremely well known and popular. That is as many views as some celebrities achieve. This shows he did something he believed in with his creative mind which led to his popular name being a success.

To get the chance to work in media is very difficult, it is an extremely fast growing industry but companies are only taking the best of the best. This leaves graduates doing unuseful job hunting. The recommended thing to do is gain your degree qualification in communications media etc. then get as much work experience as you can to make companies believe you are willing with a broad knowledge of what is expected of you. The work experience will help gain skills that are required. Even if the work experience is unpaid it it worth it in the long ter.

Examples of this include, if you are wishing to be a makeup artist for a famous film coming out the skills you will need is to have good communication skills, where you can follow instructions clearly and to your best standard possible. Creativity with their imagination and to be able to work under pressure well. Employers will look for people that had good work experience in school productions, charity events and theatrical performance. The main needed thing though would be there grade and level qualification from a proper makeup school so they have been taught exactly the correct way for makeup application. Their personality traits should be relaxing but talkative. The relaxing personality is good so that is doesn’t stress out any actors etc., and they can also keep steady hands during makeup application. However, it is always good to remain in small talk as they do so. This shows politeness and curtesy. If an actor etc. is nervous is can also take their mind of their worry.

Furthermore, another job role in the media industry is the editor for videos. They need to have good practical but technical skills. This is because, a lot of their time will be spent on computers and devices. Their attention to detail needs to be impeccable so they don’t make mistakes with their visual awareness. But to even be acknowledged within this career, there will always be some qualification requirements. For example, it is always good to start up a portfolio. Using things, you have made for work experience. It is a good idea to make edits and videos for charitable organizations. If you have degrees you’re in more the chance to be accepted quicker but there are also other routes to take by taking leveled courses in colleges which are recognized by editing companies for larger firms. To work in this job, you will need to be calm enough to be relaxed so that you don’t miss out any specific details. But also they need to have a determined personality to work well under pressure and to meet the tight deadlines that they will be set.

The film company that I have studied is called Warp Films. They are a company who produce niche films and documentaries. Which is always a good starter for new job roles as the independent films are more specific and small. However, this company is famous across the world and a lot of people will be competing to be accepted by them for their career.
Before sending in curricular vitae it is always wise to make sure it has everything that they would be looking for before so. You should complete a lot of work experience to show that you are a willing worker who wanted to broaden their knowledge in your chosen spectrum of the industry. After your curricular vitae is to the best of your capability, you should send it in and every now and again chase up the company by sending them emails. These are a formal way of communication. They advertise their job opportunities on their website. In the past Warp films has provided a chance for internship within their company. A girl called Alysha Minns completed her internship with Warp films in the production assistant industry.

Lastly, Chris Cunningham, is someone who has worked in the organization of Warp Films. He is a British video artist of age 45. He became a great producer and editor over the years. However, like all, he started his career path with a lower key job of a makeup artist and climbed his way up to succeed. His occupations include, a film maker, photographer, video artist and producer. In 2005, this was when Rubber Jonny a short book was produced with Chris as the director. They were using warp films music. He started his proper work in the early 90’s and it took until 2005 until he achieved a great achievement as being part of Warp Films. With all of his previous experience this became attractive to the company, to make them willing to use him as the producer.
