Working in Media
Within media, there are all sorts of sections which makes
media what it is today. There are television, films, newspapers, radio station,
news (journalism) and magazines. Media is something that is known as a mass
communication where interesting information which is useful to the public will
be presented somehow which can then inform the public using different methods
making them aware of the information.
In each section there are different types of jobs which make
up their category, without them the communication between media and the public
would be non existent.
For example; in the making of films there are a lot of people
and jobs required to make the film ready to present. Firstly, within the film
crew there will need to be a director, producer, a designer of the set.
photographer, costumer designers. Also, make up artist, prop organisers, editors
and composers.
Newspapers and magazines also contain articles which are
used for media and communicating with the newspaper readers about the
happenings of the world. For a newspaper to be ready for publishment there are
many jobs involved for this to happen. The newspaper journalists will have to
work the hardest. Their stories are usually from the general public themselves
when they hear about a suitable media source. Their writing will then be proof
read over by an editor.
Radio stations are used across the world, the set of them
are usually extremely busy as often they are live and there will be no room for
error. Firstly, Podcast producers, radio broadcast assistant, journalist, radio
commercials producer, news editor, presenter, news producer and reporters.
Television, there will be actors required to make up the
programs for the channels. choreographer, with their assistants, audio editors,
schedulers, broadcaster, camera operators and assistant. Directors, costumer
designer, executive producer, lighting technician, hair and makeup artist. In
addition to these, location managers, production buyer, script writer and
supervisor. There are also many smaller jobs, but these are the larger to
medium roles.
Working in media has always been a large appeal to
society. The glamourous looks that area spread
across media intrigues people to work in this spectrum. Over all media there are stories, movies and many other things including celebrities and important
people. People who wish to work in this industry will think that maybe one day
they can work with these celebrities. It is an exciting career as they have the
chance to start at the bottom like most do and work their way to the top if
they are extremely motivated. This lures people in. This popular career choice
is on which has a large variety of jobs, some low paying and some extremely
high. However, what people like about media is that even if they start off
their career lower down the industries hierarchy they have a big chance to
climb. Its an industry full of hope and excitement. Media is popular towards
people who have a creative mindset, where they can use their imagination to
create ideas. An example of this is Calvin Stowell. Calvin Stowell worked in
digital direction at the company DoSomething.org which is a non profit
organization which helps and talks to teens about social change. He made posts
which produced over 1.5 million views. He has become extremely well known and
popular. That is as many views as some celebrities achieve. This shows he did
something he believed in with his creative mind which led to his popular name
being a success.
To get the chance to work in media is very difficult, it is
an extremely fast growing industry but companies are only taking the best of
the best. This leaves graduates doing unuseful job hunting. The recommended
thing to do is gain your degree qualification in communications media etc. then
get as much work experience as you can to make companies believe you are
willing with a broad knowledge of what is expected of you. The work experience
will help gain skills that are required. Even if the work experience is unpaid
it it worth it in the long ter.
Examples of this include, if you are wishing to be a makeup
artist for a famous film coming out the skills you will need is to have good
communication skills, where you can follow instructions clearly and to your
best standard possible. Creativity with their imagination and to be able to
work under pressure well. Employers will look for people that had good work
experience in school productions, charity events and theatrical performance.
The main needed thing though would be there grade and level qualification from
a proper makeup school so they have been taught exactly the correct way for
makeup application. Their personality traits should be relaxing but talkative.
The relaxing personality is good so that is doesn’t stress out any actors etc.,
and they can also keep steady hands during makeup application. However, it is
always good to remain in small talk as they do so. This shows politeness and
curtesy. If an actor etc. is nervous is can also take their mind of their
worry.
Furthermore, another job role in the media industry is the
editor for videos. They need to have good practical but technical skills. This
is because, a lot of their time will be spent on computers and devices. Their
attention to detail needs to be impeccable so they don’t make mistakes with
their visual awareness. But to even be acknowledged within this career, there
will always be some qualification requirements. For example, it is always good
to start up a portfolio. Using things, you have made for work experience. It is
a good idea to make edits and videos for charitable organizations. If you have
degrees you’re in more the chance to be accepted quicker but there are also
other routes to take by taking leveled courses in colleges which are recognized
by editing companies for larger firms. To work in this job, you will need to be
calm enough to be relaxed so that you don’t miss out any specific details. But
also they need to have a determined personality to work well under pressure and
to meet the tight deadlines that they will be set.
The film company that I have studied is called Warp Films. They
are a company who produce niche films and documentaries. Which is always a good
starter for new job roles as the independent films are more specific and small.
However, this company is famous across the world and a lot of people will be
competing to be accepted by them for their career.
Before sending in curricular vitae it is always wise to make
sure it has everything that they would be looking for before so. You should
complete a lot of work experience to show that you are a willing worker who
wanted to broaden their knowledge in your chosen spectrum of the industry.
After your curricular vitae is to the best of your capability, you should send
it in and every now and again chase up the company by sending them emails.
These are a formal way of communication. They advertise their job opportunities
on their website. In the past Warp films has provided a chance for internship
within their company. A girl called Alysha Minns completed her internship with
Warp films in the production assistant industry.
Lastly, Chris Cunningham, is someone who has worked in the
organization of Warp Films. He is a British video artist of age 45. He became a
great producer and editor over the years. However, like all, he started his
career path with a lower key job of a makeup artist and climbed his way up to
succeed. His occupations include, a film maker, photographer, video artist and
producer. In 2005, this was when Rubber Jonny a short book was produced with
Chris as the director. They were using warp films music. He started his proper
work in the early 90’s and it took until 2005 until he achieved a great
achievement as being part of Warp Films. With all of his previous experience
this became attractive to the company, to make them willing to use him as the
producer.
